The 50mm lens is usually the one I have on my 5D. As you say the 1.4 aperture really helps out in low light, its a pretty versatile lens and I've been very pleased with how shots turn out with it.

Are you going to put some of your photos taken with the 5D up online once you've gotten used to the camera?

Hi,

I just bought a 5D yesterday and I made some similar decisions to you and got a 50mm 1.4 lens. I don't have another yet.

I'm interested in railway photography and photograph trains and railway stations which suit a 28mm or 50 mm lens.

Fortunately I had years experience in using a 28 and 50 mm FD lens on my Canon A1 a 35mm film camera.

I prefer a fixed focal length lens to a zoom as you lose out on the F stop and they're bigger and so on. But they do look impressive. I used the built in zooms on my previous camera, a Canon G3. The main advantage of a zoom to me is I don't have to move back and forth to compose the shot. The 14x zoom is really cropping and the optical zoom (I think 3.5) is not too much. But, as I said before a bigger zoom has a max apperture of F4 or F5.6 which is a bit hard in low light situations.

I do like the 1.4 aperture for low light situation and the flexibility. I may consider a zoom of something like 28-55 or similar. But not sure how much that costs.

Never needed telephotos in railway photography and also realized that the telephotos I really want for close ups cost many thousands of dollars. They are also bigger and need a tripod so are not really suitable for me.

Anyway enjoy your 5D!

Thanks Taavi, added you as a Zooomr contact - some great stuff on your Zooomr page.

Really loving my 5D so far, it's one heck of a camera!

Wow, congrats man! I went through exactly the same thing but my pickiness stopped at the D80. It's really weird that I haven't found you on Zooomr yet. You've got good stuff, I'll probably add you as a contact as soon as Zooomr starts working properly again (Uh-Oh error :/ ).

Keep posting :)

I hope so too Raoul!

fredmiranda.com was really helpful in making a decision, although every few reviews there's always somebody that totally disagrees, it's all about taking the average across them all though and making a decision!

I'm sure I'll be uploading some shots from my 5D to Zooomr soon :)

Very, very nice! :-) I do hope it lasts you a very long time, and you take some amazing photos with it, Ben!

Btw, I like fredmiranda.com a lot. I use it to see what other people think of lenses and cameras.
